Trump Posts ‘Our Country Must be the Leader in the (Crypto) Field’ Prior to Speech Before Libertarians

Donald J. Trump tightened his commitment to crypto today, saying on social media, “I am very positive and open-minded towards cryptocurrency companies and anything related to this new and emerging industry.” is trying to win the support of pro-crypto voters.

“Our country must be a leader in this area, there is no second place,” Trump said on Truth Social before his speech at the Libertarian National Convention in Washington, D.C. today.

Trump then took a shot at his opponent: “On the other hand, crook Joe Biden, the worst president in our country’s history, wants the country to die a slow, painful death.”

Sentiment towards crypto has noticeably warmed in Washington since Trump deliberately tried to persuade pro-crypto voters. The former president first made pro-crypto comments at a dinner at Mar-a-Lago earlier this month. Then last Tuesday, Trump’s presidential campaign began accepting crypto donations, fulfilling the presumptive Republican nominee’s promise to be the first major party candidate to embrace bitcoin, ether and other digital currencies.

Following Trump’s pro-crypto rhetoric and actions, the Biden administration’s opposition to crypto appears to have softened, as has the traditionally anti-crypto Securities and Exchange Commission’s stance. Last Wednesday, the White House issued a statement expressing its opposition to the House of Representatives passing the crypto market structure bill, but Biden did not threaten to veto. The House has begun approving the measure, which will now head to the Senate. Then on Thursday, Ethereum exchange-traded funds (ETFs) took a big step towards becoming available in the US after the Securities and Exchange Commission approved key regulatory filings. Just a month ago, such approval was considered extremely unlikely.
