Russian crypto exchange CEO detained by Polish police for fraud and money laundering; The perpetrator will be extradited to the USA.

Polish police arrested Dmitriv Vasiliev for violating Polish privacy laws. This case was linked to fraud and money laundering while operating the crypto exchange.

Vasiliev was managing Russia’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, WEX, which collapsed 6 years ago. This arrest was made by order of the Warsaw Regional Persecution Office and he will be extradited to the United States very soon.

“Dmitry V. is suspected of numerous fraud, money transfer and money laundering offenses in connection with operating one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges.”

In August 2021, he was detained at Poland’s airport at the request of Kazakhstan. He was released a few weeks later and returned to Russia.

Known as the “Crypto King”, Vasiliev re-entered the country for at least 3 years after returning to Russia and remained undetected for a long time.

Crypto cases before Poland arrests Russian exchange CEO

The past month has seen several ongoing crypto cases, including cases from police departments around the world. Recently, a Delhi officer detained a West Bengal resident who hacked the WazirX exchange and received $235 million from the exchange.

Cops seized three laptops from the exchange and tracked down the authorized signature to confirm the transactions. Following long-awaited investigations, SK Masud Alam was arrested earlier this month.

The Malaysian police department has successfully tracked down a $1.6 million kidnapping ransom paid in collaboration with the Binance exchange. Binance Financial Intelligence Unit leveraged advanced blockchain to track the cryptocurrency paid to the kidnappers and recover a significant portion of the ransom.
