Democrats Pushing Harris Campaign for ‘Reset’ on Crypto Stance, House Rep Says

US Vice President Kamala Harris “understands” crypto and may take it up as an issue in her newly launched campaign for the White House, Rep. Wiley Nickel (D-NC) said at the Bitcoin Nashville conference on Saturday.

“We did a complete reset in the presidential election,” Nickel said, adding, “We’re working very hard to get a reset from the vice president.”

Nickel said the comments come as 28 Democratic officials, including a dozen or so members of the House of Representatives, are pressing party leaders for a “reset” on crypto policy. Nickel said some factions of the party are pressuring the Harris campaign to come out in favor of crypto.

Crypto continues to emerge as a campaign issue in the 2024 elections, already inundated with tens of millions of dollars in donations from industry leaders. Democrats have fallen far short of former President Donald Trump’s promise to be friendly to Bitcoin and crypto advocates, as they oppose President Joe Biden’s administration and tough financial regulators.

But Trump was once anti-crypto: He called bitcoin a “fraud” when he held the White House from 2017 to 2020. Nickel took a stab at Trump for the policy change on stage, drawing hearty boos from the packed convention hall full of red MAGA hats. Trump is scheduled to speak later in the day.

This is a developing story.
