Crypto is an important election issue for 20% of voters: DCG poll

Crypto is emerging as a hot topic in this year’s US presidential election, with many voters eager to hear from their candidates on the asset class.

According to a Digital Currency Group (DCG) poll of 1,201 registered voters conducted last month, about one in five voters see crypto as an important issue in the 2024 election. About 40% of voters said they want the its candidates talk more about crypto, and most respondents agree that crypto regulation needs an “overhaul.” The interest is even though only 14% of voters said they have crypto exposure and 69% said they still don’t feel knowledgeable about the asset class. “Most voters don’t trust elected officials to understand innovative technology like crypto, and more than half are concerned that policymakers are stifling innovation through overregulation,” the DCG report stated. Policymakers are currently in a partisan political stalemate over crypto. Democrats want strict industry rules to protect consumers like those in the existing banking system. Instead, Republicans are looking for tailored regulations with a lighter touch to avoid driving industry offshore. Republican candidate Donald Trump has recently come out in support of the crypto industry, despite taking a hard line against Bitcoin in the past. Republicans passed a resolution in Congress this week to overturn SAB 121, an accounting guidance backed by the Democratic-led White House that prevents banks from offering custody services for crypto assets. The DCG survey mentioned that 50% of respondents said they would be more likely to buy cryptocurrency if it was offered by an established and regulated company. Survey respondents included voters from swing states including Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Montana, Pennsylvania and Arizona.
