Justin Sun bought a banana for $6.2m at Sotheby’s and plans to eat it

Tron founder Justin Sun purchased the famous banana taped to his wall sculpture for $6.2 million after a six-minute bidding at Sotheby’s. He says he will ‘eat the banana himself’.

On November 21, Justin Sun posted about Maurizio Cattelan’s “Comedian,” an artwork he recently purchased from Sotheby’s, which consists of a single banana taped to the wall using duct tape.

“This is not just a work of art; X represents a cultural phenomenon that bridges the worlds of art, memes, and the cryptocurrency community,” Sun wrote in his post.

The TRON(TRX) creator also revealed that he plans to “eat the banana as part of this unique artistic experience, honoring its place in both art history and popular culture.”

According to Bloomberg’s report, after purchasing the sculpture, Sun received a certificate of authenticity that gave him the right to display the piece as an official work of art. Sotheby’s also gave Sun a starter kit for the sculpture, consisting of a banana, a roll of duct tape, and a detailed instruction manual on how the piece should be presented.

Sun hopes the work will inspire further discussion and “become a part of history”, creating inspiration and impact for art enthusiasts around the world.

The sculpture was first unveiled at Art Basel Miami Beach in 2019. It was exhibited on a stand at Galerie Perrotin.

Despite its simplicity, the artwork attracted a large crowd of viewers. It didn’t take long for Cattelan’s banana to become a world-famous meme. The New York Post’s “Banana!” It was featured on the cover. and reproduced as various types of goods.

There were other cases when the famous banana was eaten before the sun. In April last year, a South Korean student reportedly ate a banana taped to the wall while it was on display at Seoul’s Leeum Art Museum. The banana was later replaced and the museum did not file criminal charges against the student.

The banana first appeared in 2019, when New York-based performance artist David Datuna took the banana from the wall and consumed it while it remained on display at Galerie Perrotin.
